His leisure was largely employed in See also:collecting, translating and editing the See also:folklore of the western See also:Highlands, taken down from the lips of the natives. The results of his investigations were published in four volumes under the See also:title Popular Tales of the West Highlands (186o—1862), and See also:form a most important contribution to the subject, the necessary precursor to the subsequent Gaelic revival in See also:Great See also:Britain. Campbell was also devoted to See also:geology and other scientific pursuits, and he invented the See also:sunshine See also:recorder, used in most of the See also:British meteorological stations. He died at See also:Cannes on the 17th of See also:February 1885.
