ONESICRITUS, or ONESICRATES , of See also:Aegina or Astypaleia (probably simply the " old See also:city " of Aegina), one of the writers on See also:Alexander the See also:Great. At an advanced See also:age he became a See also:pupil of See also:Diogenes the Cynic, and gained such repute as a student of See also:philosophy that he was selected by Alexander to hold a See also:conference with the See also:Indian See also:Gymnosophists. When the See also:fleet was constructed on the Hydaspes, Onesicritus was appointed See also:chief See also:pilot (in his vanity he calls himself See also:commander), and in this capacity accompanied See also:Nearchus on the voyage from the mouth of the See also:Indus to the See also:Persian gulf. He wrote a diffuse See also:biography of Alexander, which in addition to See also:historical details contained descriptions of the countries visited, especially See also:India. After the See also:king's See also:death, Onesicritus appears to have completed his See also:work at the See also:court of See also:Lysimachus, king of See also:Thrace. Its historical value was considered small, it being avowedly a See also:panegyric, and contemporaries (including even . Alexander himself) regarded it as untrustworthy. See also:Strabo especially takes Onesicritus to task for his exaggeration and love of the marvellous. His See also:Para plus (or description of the coasts of India) probably formed See also:part of the work, and, incorporated by See also:Juba II. of See also:Mauretania with the accounts of See also:coasting voyages by Nearchus and other geographers, and circulated by him under the name of Onesicritus, was largely used by See also:Pliny.
