He inherited all Leicester's See also:property under the earl's will at his See also:death in 1588, and in the following See also:year the property of See also:Ambrose Dudley, earl of Warwick. In 1594 he made a voyage to the See also:West Indies, and in 1596 he took See also:part; in the expedition to See also:Cadiz and was knighted. In 1592 he had married a See also:sister of Thomas See also:Cavendish the circumnavigator. On her death he married Alicia See also:Leigh in 1596, by whom he had four daughters. After the death of Elizabeth he endeavoured
to secure recognition of his See also:legitimacy, and of his right to inherit the titles of his See also:father and See also:uncle. The proceedings were quashed by the See also:Star Chamber. In 1605 he obtained leave to travel abroad, and went to See also:Italy accompanied by the beautiful See also:Miss Elizabeth See also:Southwell, daughter of Sir Robert Southwell of Woodrising, in the See also:dress of a See also:page. When ordered to return See also:home and to provide for his deserted wife and See also:family, he refused, was outlawed, and his property was confiscated. On the See also:continent he avowed himself a See also:Roman See also:Catholic, married Elizabeth See also:South-well at See also:Lyons, and entered the service of Cosimo II., See also:grand-duke of See also:Tuscany. In the service of the grand-duke he is said to have done some fighting against the See also:Barbary pirates, and he was undoubtedly employed in draining the marshes behind See also:Leghorn, and in the construction of the See also:port. In 1620 the See also:emperor See also:Ferdinand II. gave him a patent recognizing his claim not only to the earldom of Warwick but to the duchy of Northumberland, which had been held by his grandfather, who was executed by Queen See also:Mary Tudor. In Italy Dudley was known as Duca di Nortombria and See also:Conte di Warwick. He died near See also:Florence on the 6th of See also:September 1649, leaving a large family of sons and daughters. His deserted wife, Alicia, was created duchess of Dudley by See also:Charles I. in 1644, and died in 167o, when the See also:title became See also:extinct. Through a daughter who married the See also:Marquis Paleotti, Dudley was the ancestor of the wife of the first duke of See also:Shrewsbury (of the revolution of 1688), and of her See also:brother who was executed at See also:Tyburn for See also:murder on the 17th of See also:March 1718. Dudley was the author of a pamphlet addressed to See also:- KING
