ESHER , a township in the See also:

Epsom See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Surrey, See also:England, 141 m. S.W. of See also:London by the London & See also:South WcszJ , railway (Esher and See also:Claremont station). It is pleasantly situated on rising ground above the See also:river See also:Mole, 3 M. from its junction with the See also:Thames. To the See also:north-See also:west See also:lie the grounds of Esher See also:Place. Of the See also:mansion-See also:house founded by See also:William of See also:Waynflete, See also:bishop of See also:Winchester (c. 1450), in which See also:Cardinal See also:Wolsey resided for three or four See also:weeks after his sudden fall from See also:power in 1529, only the See also:gatehouse remains. It is known as Wolsey's See also:Tower, but is apparently See also:part of Waynflete's See also:foundation. A new mansion was erected in 1803. To the south is Claremont See also:Palace, built by the See also:great See also:Lord See also:Clive (1769) on the site of a mansion of See also:Sir See also:John See also:Vanbrugh. In 1816 it was the See also:residence of Princess See also:Charlotte, wife of See also:Prince (afterwards See also:King) See also:Leopold. She died here in 1817, and on the See also:death of her See also:husband in 1865 the See also:property passed to the See also:crown. See also:Louis Philippe, ex-king of the See also:French, resided here from 1848 until his death in 185o.

In 1882 Claremont became the private property of Queer See also:

Victoria. See also:Christ See also:Church, Esher, contains See also:fine memorials of King Leopold and others, and one of its three bells is said to have been brought from See also:San Domingo by Sir See also:Francis See also:Drake. To the north near the railway station is See also:Sandown See also:Park, where important See also:race meetings are held. Esher is included in the See also:urban See also:district of Esher and The Dittons, of which Thames See also:Ditton is a favourite See also:riverside resort. The whole district is largely residential. Pop. (1901) 9489.
