In 1220 Enghelberto d'Ugo Piccolomini received the See also:fief of Montertari in Val d'Orcia from the See also:emperor See also:Frederick II. as a See also:reward for services rendered. The family acquired houses and towers in Siena and castles in the See also:republic's territory, including Montone and See also:Castiglione; the latter they sold to the See also:commune in 1321. They obtained See also:great See also:wealth through See also:trade, and established counting-houses in See also:Genoa, See also:Venice, See also:Aquileia, See also:Trieste, and in various cities of See also:France and See also:Germany.
