N.W. of See also:Chicago. Pop. (189o) 23,584; (1900) 31,051, of whom 9337 were See also:foreign-See also:born (6690 Swedes); (1910 See also:census) 45,401. See also:Area, 8.91 sq. m. It is served by the Chicago, See also:Burlington & See also:Quincy, the Chicago & See also:North-Western, the Chicago, See also:Milwaukee & St See also:Paul, the Chicago, Milwaukee & See also:Gary (" Rockford Route ") and the Illinois Central See also:railways, and is connected by interurban electric railway with Chicago and See also:Freeport, Illinois, and See also:Janesville, See also:Wisconsin. The city has a Memorial See also:Hall, erected in See also:honour of the soldiers and sailors of Winnebago county, and in See also:charge of the See also:Grand See also:Army of the See also:Republic; a soldiers' memorial See also:fountain; a See also:Carnegie library, containing 51,340 volumes in 1909; and the Velie Museum of natural See also:history. Rockford See also:College (non-sectarian), for the higher See also:education of See also:women, is ranked by the See also:United States See also:Commissioner of Education as one of fifteen women's colleges of the highest grade in the See also:country; it was opened in 1849 as Rockford See also:Seminary, and was named Rockford College in 1892. In 1908—9 it had 196 students. Rockford is the see of a See also:Roman See also:Catholic See also:bishop. In and near the city there are two hospitals and three sanatoriums. Manufacturing is facilitated by See also:good See also:water-See also:power, supplied by a See also:dam across the Rock river about 800 ft. See also:long, constructed in 1844.
