S.S.E. of See also:Frankfort-on-Oder and 102 M. S.E. of See also:Berlin by the See also:direct See also:main See also:line of railway to See also:Breslau. Pop. (1905) 14,208. It is still partly surrounded by its old fortifications and has numerous See also:medieval houses. It contains the handsome See also:palace of the See also:dukes of Sagan. Among other buildings are an Evangelical See also:church with a conspicuous See also:steeple and containing the See also:burial vaults of the ducal See also:family, and See also:Augustine and a Jesuit monasterial church, a medieval town-See also:hall with old cloisters attached, a See also:Roman See also:Catholic gymnasium and a large See also:hospital, named after its founder, the duchess Dorothea (1793–1862), wife of See also:Edmund, See also:duke of Talleyrand-See also:Perigord-Dino. The leading See also:industry of the town is See also:cloth-See also:weaving, with See also:wool and See also:flax See also:spinning; there is also some See also:trade in wool and See also:grain. The mediate principality of Sagan, now forming a portion of the Prussian governmental See also:district of See also:Liegnitz, and formed in 1397 out of a portion of the duchy of See also:Glogau, has several times changed hands by See also:purchase as well as by See also:inheritance. One of its most famous possessors was See also:Wallenstein, who held it for seven years before his See also:death in 1634. Bought by See also:Prince Lobkowitz in 1646, the principality remained in his family until 1787, when it was sold to See also:Peter, duke of See also:Courland, whose descendant, Prince Bozon (b.

Napoleon See also:Louis (1811–1898), duke of Talleyrand-Perigord, owned it in 1910. The principality has an See also:area of nearly 5oo sq. m. and a See also:population of 65,000.
