San Fernando is one of the three See also:principal See also:naval ports of Spain; together with See also:Ferrol and See also:Cartagena it is governed by an See also:admiral who has the distinctive See also:title of See also:captain-See also:general. The See also:town is connected with Cadiz (4 m. N.W.) by a railway, and there is an electric See also:tramway from the See also:arsenal (in the suburb of La Carraca) to Cadiz. The principal buildings are See also:government workshops for the See also:navy, See also:barracks, a naval See also:academy, See also:observatory, See also:hospital, See also:bull-See also:ring and a handsome town See also:hall. In the neighbourhood salt in largely produced and See also:stone is quarried; the manufactures include See also:spirits, See also:beer, See also:leather, See also:esparto fabrics, See also:soap, hats, sails and See also:ropes; and there is a large See also:iron-foundry. San Fernando was probably a Carthaginian See also:settlement. On a See also:hill to the S. stood a See also:temple dedicated to the Tyrian See also:Hercules; to the E. is a See also:Roman See also:bridge, rebuilt in the 15th See also:century after partial demolition by the See also:Moors. The arsenal was founded in 1790. During the See also:Peninsular See also:War the See also:cortes met at San Fernando (181o), but the See also:present name of the town See also:dates only from 1813; it was previously known as Isla de Leon.
