As See also:lord high treasurer of See also:England, an See also:office to which he was appointed in 1320, the bishop was associated in the popular mind with the misdeeds of Edward II., and consequently, after the See also:king fled before the advancing troops of See also:Queen See also:Isabella, he was murdered in See also:London by the See also:mob on the 15th of See also:October 1326. Stapledon is famous as the founder of Exeter See also:College, Oxford, which originated in Stapledon See also:Hall, established in 1314 by the bishop and his See also:elder See also:brother, See also:Sir See also:Richard Stapledon, a See also:judge of the king's See also:bench. He also contributed very liberally to the rebuilding of his See also:cathedral at Exeter.
