The See also:present town of Znaim was founded in 1226 by Ottacar I. of Bohemia on the site of Znojmo, the ancient See also:capital of the tributary margraves of Moravia, which had been destroyed in 1145. Znaim is best known to See also:history for the See also:armistice concluded here in 1809 after the See also:battle of See also:Wagram between See also:Napoleon I. and the See also:archduke Charles. In 1866 the Prussians occupied the town from See also:July 13th till See also:September 3rd. The novelist Karl Postl (1793-1864), who wrote under the See also:pseudonym of Charles See also:Sealsfield, was See also:born at Poppitz, 21 m. S.W.
