It is served by two branches of the See also:Chicago, See also:Milwaukee & St Paul, by the See also:main See also:line and one See also:branch of the Chicago, See also:Rock See also:Island & Pacific, by the See also:Illinois Central, by the See also:Iowa Central, and by the Minneapolis & St See also:Louis See also:railways. It is attractively situated between See also:Fountain See also:Lake and Albert Lea Lake, and is a summer resort. It has a public library and the Freeborn County See also:Court See also:House, and is the seat of Albert Lea See also:College (Presbyterian, for See also:women), founded in 1884, and of See also:Luther See also:Academy (See also:Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran), founded in 1888. Albert Lea is a railway and manufacturing centre of considerable importance, has See also:grain See also:elevators and foundries and See also:machine shops, and manufactures bricks, tiles, carriages, wagons, See also:flour, corsets, refrigerators and woollen goods. The city is also the centre of large See also:dairy interests, and there are many creameries in the county. Numerous artesian See also:wells furnish the city with an ample See also:supply of See also:water of unusual excellence. Albert Lea was settled in 1855 and received a city See also:charter in 1878.

honour of See also:Lieutenant Albert See also:Miller Lea (1808-1891), a See also:West Point See also:graduate (1831) who, on behalf of the See also:United States See also:government, first surveyed the region and described it in a See also:report published in 1836. He was a lieutenant-See also:colonel of See also:engineers in the See also:Con-federate See also:army during the See also:Civil See also:War.
