(1443-15oo), See also:duke of See also:Saxony, surnamed AMMOSUs or THE COURAGEOUS, younger son of See also:Frederick II., the Mild, elector and duke of Saxony, was See also:born on the 27th of See also:January 1443, and after escaping from the hands of Kunz von Kaufungen, who had abducted him together with his See also:brother Ernest, passed some See also:time at the See also:court of the See also:emperor Frederick III. in See also:Vienna. In 1464 he married Zedena, or Sidonia, daughter of See also:George See also:Podebrad, See also:king of Bohemia, but failed to obtain the Bohemian See also:crown on the See also:death of George in 1471. After the death of the elector Frederick in 1464, Albert and Ernest ruled their lands together, but in 1485 a See also:division was made by the treaty of See also:Leipzig, and Albert received See also:Meissen, together with some adjoining districts, and founded the Albertine See also:branch of the See also:family of See also:Wettin. Regarded as a capable soldier by the emperor, Albert, in 1475, took a prominent See also:part in the See also:campaign against See also:Charles the Bold, duke of See also:Burgundy, and in 1487 led an expedition against See also:Matthias See also:Corvinus, king of See also:Hungary, which failed owing to lack of support on the part of the emperor. In 1488 he marched with the imperial forces to See also:free the See also:Roman king See also:Maximilian from his imprisonment at See also:Bruges, and when, in 1489, the king returned to See also:Germany, Albert was See also:left as his representative to prosecute the See also:war against the rebels. He was successful in restoring the authority of Maximilian in See also:Holland, See also:Flanders and See also:Brabant, but failed to obtain any repayment of the large sums of See also:money which he had spent in these See also:campaigns. His services were rewarded in 1498 when Maximilian bestowed upon him the See also:title of hereditary See also:governor (potestat) of See also:Friesland, but he had to make See also:good his claim by force of arms.
