APURIMAC , an interior See also:

department of See also:southern See also:Peru, bounded N. by the department of See also:Ayacucho, E. by See also:Cuzco, S. and W. by Cuzco and Ayacucho, See also:Area, 8187 sq. m.; pop. (1896) 177,387. The department was created in 18?3 and comprises five provinces. Its See also:physical features and productions are very similar to those of Ayacucho (q.v.), with the exception that See also:sugar-See also:cane is cultivated with noteworthy success in the See also:low valley of the See also:province of Abancay. The See also:capital, Abancay, 110 m. See also:south-See also:west of Cuzco, which is only a See also:village in See also:size but is See also:rich in See also:historical associations and Andahuaylas, in the See also:north-west See also:part of the department, are its See also:principal towns. See also:Modern See also:Apulia. APYRE%IA (Gr. alrvpe ia, from a-, privative, irvpE ruety, to be in a See also:fever, 7rup, See also:fire, fever), in See also:pathology, the normal See also:interval or See also:period of intermission in a fever. `AQIBA See also:BEN See also:JOSEPH (c. 50-132), Jewish Palestinian See also:rabbi, of the circle known as Lana (q.v.). It is almost impossible to See also:separate the true from the false in the numerous traditions respecting his See also:life. He became the See also:chief teacher in the rabbinical school of Jaffa, where, it is said, he had 24,000 scholars. What-ever their number, it seems certain that among them was the celebrated Rabbi See also:Meir, and that through him and others 'Aqiba exerted a See also:great See also:influence on the development of the doctrines embodied in the Mishnah.

He sided with See also:

Bar Cochebas in the last Jewish revolt against See also:Rome, recognized him as the See also:Messiah, and acted as his See also:sword-See also:bearer. Being taken prisoner by the See also:Romans under See also:Julius See also:Severus, he was flayed alive with circumstances of great See also:cruelty, and met his See also:fate, according to tradition, with marvellous steadfastness and composure. He is said by some to have been a See also:hundred and twenty years old at the See also:time of his See also:death. He is one of the ten Jewish martyrs whose names occur in a See also:penitential See also:prayer still used in the See also:synagogue service. 'Aqiba was among the first to systematize the Jewish tradition, and he paved the way for the compilation of the Mishnah. From his school emanated the See also:Greek See also:translation of the scriptures by See also:Aquila.
