(1896) 177,387. The department was created in 18?3 and comprises five provinces. Its See also:physical features and productions are very similar to those of Ayacucho (q.v.), with the exception that See also:sugar-See also:cane is cultivated with noteworthy success in the See also:low valley of the See also:province of Abancay. The See also:capital, Abancay, 110 m. See also:south-See also:west of Cuzco, which is only a See also:village in See also:size but is See also:rich in See also:historical associations and Andahuaylas, in the See also:north-west See also:part of the department, are its See also:principal towns. Being taken prisoner by the See also:Romans under See also:Julius See also:Severus, he was flayed alive with circumstances of great See also:cruelty, and met his See also:fate, according to tradition, with marvellous steadfastness and composure. He is said by some to have been a See also:hundred and twenty years old at the See also:time of his See also:death. He is one of the ten Jewish martyrs whose names occur in a See also:penitential See also:prayer still used in the See also:synagogue service. 'Aqiba was among the first to systematize the Jewish tradition, and he paved the way for the compilation of the Mishnah.
