borough in the See also:West See also:Riding of See also:York-See also:shire, See also:England, within the See also:parliamentary borough of See also:Dewsbury, 8 m. S.S.W. of See also:Leeds, on the See also:Great See also:Northern, See also:London & See also:North Western, and See also:Lancashire & See also:Yorkshire See also:railways. Pop. (1900) 30,321. See also:Area 2039 acres. The See also:church of All See also:Saints is mainly Perpendicular, and contains some See also:fine woodwork, mostly of the 17th See also:century, and some See also:good memorial tombs. The See also:market square contains an excellent See also:group of See also:modern buildings, including the See also:town See also:hall, public library, See also:post See also:office and others. The town is a centre of the heavy woollen See also:trade, and has extensive manufactures of See also:army cloths, See also:pilot cloths, druggets, flushings, &c. The working up of old material as " See also:shoddy " is largely carried on. There are also See also:iron foundries, manufactures of machinery, and See also:stone quarries. The town lies on the See also:south-west Yorkshire coalfield, and there are a number of collieries in the See also:district. The borough is governed by a See also:mayor, six aldermen, and eighteen councillors.
