Its northernmost promontory, See also:Murchison Point, is also the northernmost point of the See also:American mainland. It was discovered by See also:Captain (afterwards See also:Sir See also:James) See also:Ross, during. his expedition of 1829-1833, and was named after Sir Felix See also:Booth, who had been chiefly instrumental in fitting out the expedition. Boothia forms the western See also:side of Boothia Gulf. From the See also:main See also:mass of the See also:continent the peninsula is almost. separated by lakes and inlets; and a narrow channel known as See also:Bellot Strait intervenes between it and North See also:Somerset See also:Island, which was discovered by Sir E. See also:Parry in 1819. The peninsula is not only interesting for its connexion with the Franklin expedition and the Franklin See also:search, but is of scientific importance from the north magnetic See also:pole having been first distinctly localized here ,by Ross, on the western side, in 7o° 5' N., 96° 47' W. Boothia Gulf separates the north-western portion of See also:Baffin See also:Land and See also:Melville Peninsula from Boothia Peninsula. It is connected with See also:Barrow Strait and See also:Lancaster. See also:Sound by See also:Prince See also:Regent Inlet, with Franklin Strait by Bellot Strait, and with See also:Fox Channel by Fury and Hecla Strait. The See also:principal bays are See also:Committee and Pelly in the See also:southern portion, and See also:Lord See also:Mayor in the western.
