With the aid of the authorities of his native See also:town he was enabled at the See also:age of fifteen to enter the See also:naval school, in which he studied two years and earned a high reputation. He then took See also:part in the Anglo-French expedition of 1845 to See also:Madagascar, and received the See also:cross of the See also:Legion of See also:Honour for distinguished conduct. He afterwards took part in another Anglo-French expedition, that of See also:Parana, which opened the See also:river La See also:Plata to See also:commerce. In 1851 he joined the Arctic expedition under the command of See also:Captain See also:Kennedy in See also:search of See also:Sir See also:John See also:Franklin, and discovered the strait between See also:Boothia See also:Felix and See also:Somerset See also:Land which bears his name. See also:Early in 1852 he was promoted See also:lieutenant, and in the same See also:year accompanied the Franklin search expedition under Captain See also:Inglefield. As on the previous occasion, his intelligence, devotion to See also:duty and courage won him the esteem and admiration of all with whom he was associated. While making a perilous See also:journey with two comrades for the purpose of communicating with Sir See also:Edward See also:Belcher, he suddenly disappeared in an opening between the broken masses of See also:ice (See also:August 1853). A See also:pension was granted to his See also:family by the See also:emperor See also:Napoleon III., and an See also:obelisk was erected to his memory in front of See also:Greenwich See also:hospital.
