He was sent as naturalist with See also:Captain See also:Nicholas Baudin's expedition to See also:Australia in 1798, but See also:left the See also:vessel at See also:Mauritius, and spent two years in exploring See also:Reunion and other islands. Joining the See also:army on his return; he was See also:present at the battles of See also:Ulm and See also:Austerlitz, and in 1808 went to See also:Spain with See also:Marshal See also:Soult. His See also:attachment to the See also:Napoleonic See also:dynasty and dislike to the Bourbons were shown in various ways during 1815, and his name was consequently placed on the See also:list of the proscribed; but after wandering in disguise from See also:place to place he was allowed quietly to return to See also:Paris in 1820. In 1829 he was placed at the See also:head of a scientific expedition to the Morea, and in 1839 he had See also:charge of the exploration of See also:Algeria. He died on the 23rd of See also:December 1846. He was editor of the Dictionnaire classique d'histoire naturelle, and among his See also:separate productions were:—Essais sur See also:les Iles Fortunes (1802); Voyage clans les See also:Ales d'Afrique (1803); Voyage souterrain, ou description du See also:plateau de Saint-See also:Pierre de Maestricht et de ses vastes cryptes (1821) ; L'Homme, essai zoologique sur le genre humain (1827); Resume de la geographie de la Peninsule (1838).
