He was ordained in 1836, and two years later was elected See also:senior See also:tutor of See also:Emmanuel See also:College, Cambridge. From 1843 to 1849 he was See also:vice-See also:principal of St See also:David's College, See also:Lampeter, and in 1854 was appointed Norrisian See also:professor of divinity at Cambridge. His best-known See also:book is the Exposition of the See also:Thirty-nine Articles (vol. i., Cambridge, 185o; vol. ii., See also:London, 1853), which remained for many years a See also:standard See also:work on the subject. In 1864 he was consecrated bishop of See also:Ely, and proceeded to reorganize his See also:diocese. He maintained that the deposition of Bishop See also:Colenso endangered the See also:independence of bishops. Nevertheless, he was opposed to Colenso's See also:criticism of the See also:Bible, and replied to it in The See also:Pentateuch and the Elohistic See also:Psalms (1863), written from a conservative standpoint. In 1869 he was one of the consecrating prelates when See also:Temple became bishop of See also:Exeter, and endeavoured to remove the See also:prejudice against his See also:appointment by showing that Temple was not responsible for the views of other writers in the famous Essays and Reviews (186o). He was bishop of See also:Winchester from 1873 till 1890, when See also:ill-See also:health compelled him to resign.
