JAMES (1839–1896) , Anglo-See also:Indian engineer and See also:administrator, was the son of See also:Robert Browne of See also:Falkirk in See also:Scotland. He was educated at the military See also:college, Addiscombe, and received a See also:commission in the See also:Bengal See also:engineers in 1857. He served in the expedition against the Mahsud Waziris in 186o, being mentioned in despatches, and in 1863 in the Umbeyla See also:campaign, when he was three times mentioned. In See also:January 1875 he became See also:superintendent of See also:works for the See also:building of the See also:Indus See also:bridge. In 1877 he was promoted See also:lieutenant-See also:colonel, and in 1878–1879 accompanied Sir Donald See also:- STEWART, ALEXANDER TURNEY (1803-1876)

In 1881 he became colonel, and in 1882 commanded the Indian engineer contingent sent to See also:Egypt, being See also:present at the See also:battle of Tell-el-Kebir. For his services in Egypt he received the 3rd class of the Osmanieh See also:- ORDER

In 1892 he was appointed See also:agent to the See also:governor-general in See also:Baluchistan, in See also:succession to Sir Robert See also:Sandeman, his intimate experience of the Baluchis, gained during his railway See also:work, having specially fitted him for this See also:post. He died suddenly on the 13th of See also:June 1896. Sir James Browne was a See also:man of splendid courage and physique, and many tales are told of the See also:personal prowess which, together with his sym-
pathetic knowledge of the natives, made him a popular See also:hero among the frontier tribesmen.
