He was educated at See also:Edinburgh and at the university of St See also:Andrews, where he studied for the See also:church. He wrote a " See also:Sketch of the See also:History of Edinburgh," for Ewbank's Picturesque Views of that See also:city, 1823—1825. In 1826 he became a member of the See also:Faculty of See also:Advocates, and obtained the degree of LL.D. from See also:King's See also:College, See also:Aberdeen. His See also:works include a See also:Critical Examination of See also:Macculloch's See also:Work on the See also:Highlands and Islands of See also:Scotland (1826), Apercu sur See also:les Hieroglyphes d'Agypte (See also:Paris, 1827), a Vindication of the Scottish See also:Bar from the Attacks of Mr See also:Broughton, and History of the Highlands and Highland Clans (1834—1836). He was appointed editor of the Caledonian See also:Mercury in 1827; and two years later he became sub-editor of the seventh edition of the See also:Encyclopaedia Britannica, to which he contributed a large number of articles. He died in See also:April 1841.
