CUSTRIN, or KUSTRIN , a See also:town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Prussia, a fortress of the first See also:rank, at the confluence of the See also:Oder and See also:Warthe, 18 m. N.E. from See also:Frankfort-on-Oder and 51 M. N.E. of See also:Berlin by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 16,473 (including the See also:garrison). It consists of the town proper within the strong fortifications, a suburb on the See also:left See also:bank of the Oder, and one on the right bank of the Warthe. There are three Evangelical churches and one See also:Roman See also:Catholic, and a handsome town See also:hall. There are See also:bridges over both See also:rivers. Custrin has some manufactories of See also:potato-See also:meal, machinery, pianos, See also:furniture, cigars, &c., and there is a considerable See also:river See also:trade. About 1250 a town was erected on the site of Custrin, where a fishing See also:village originally stood. From 1535 till 1571 it was the See also:residence of See also:John, See also:margrave of See also:Brandenburg-Custrin, who died without male heirs in 1571. Custrin was the See also:prison of See also:Frederick the See also:Great when See also:crown-See also:prince, and the See also:scene of the See also:execution of his friend Hans See also:Hermann von Katte on the 6th of See also:November 1730.
