DUMANJUG , a See also:

town of the See also:province of Celli, See also:island of Celli, Philippine Islands, on the W. See also:coast, at the mouth of the Duman-See also:jug See also:river, about 4o m. S.W. of the town of Cebfi. Pop. (1903) 22,203. In 1903, after the See also:census had been taken, the adjacent town of See also:Ronda (pop. 9662) was annexed to Dumanjug. Duman-jug is in communication with the town of See also:Sibonga, on the opposite See also:shore of one of the few passes through the mountains of the interior. See also:Indian See also:corn and See also:sugar-See also:cane are grown successfully in the neighbouring See also:country, and the town has an important coast See also:trade. DU MARSAIS, CESAR CHESNEAU, SIEUR (1676-1756), See also:French philologist, was See also:born at See also:Marseilles on the 17th of See also:July 1676. He was educated in his native town by the Fathers of the See also:Oratory, into whose See also:congregation he entered; but he See also:left it at the See also:age of twenty-five and went to See also:Paris, where he marriedand was admitted an See also:advocate (1704). He was See also:tutor to the sons successively of the See also:president de Maisons, of See also:John See also:Law, the projector, and of the See also:marquis de See also:Bauffremont. He then opened a boarding school in the See also:faubourg St See also:Victor, which scarcely afforded him the means of subsistence.

He made contributions of See also:

great value on philological and philosophical subjects to the Encyclopedic, and after vain attempts to secure a competence from the See also:court he was insured against want by the generosity of a private See also:patron. He died in Paris on the I Ith of See also:June 1756. The researches of Du Marsais are distinguished by considerable individuality. He held sensible views on See also:education and elaborated a See also:system of teaching Latin, which, although open to See also:grave See also:criticism,wasauseful protest against current methods of teaching. His best See also:works are his Principes de grammaire and his See also:Des tropes, ou des diferents See also:sens clans lesquels on pent prendre un mot (1730). An edition of his works (7 vols.) was collected by Duchosal and Millon, and was'published with an eloge on Du Marsais by D'See also:Alembert at Paris in 1797.
