He studied at the See also:universities of See also:Bonn and Berlin till 1834, was then accused of participation in the students' See also:societies, which the See also:government was endeavouring to suppress, and was condemned to six years' imprisonment, afterwards reduced to six months. He had already begun his labours as a historian, but after serving his See also:sentence in 1837, found himself debarred till 1839 from completing his course at See also:Halle, where in 1842 he obtained a professorship. Elected to the See also:National See also:Assembly at See also:Frankfort in 1848, he joined the Right Centre party, and was chosen reporter of the projected constitution. He sat in the See also:Erfurt assembly in 185o, and in the second Prussian chamber from 1849 to 1852. During the crisis in See also:Schleswig and See also:Holstein in 185o he endeavoured in See also:person to aid the duchies in their struggles. An outspoken opponent of the policy of See also:Manteuffel, he was refused promotion by the Prussian government, and in 1857 accepted the professorship of See also:history at See also:Tubingen. In 1859, however, he was recalled to Berlin as assistant in the See also:ministry of See also:state in the Auerswald See also:cabinet, and in 1861 was appointed councillor to the See also:crown See also:prince. In 1867 he became director of the Prussian archives, with which it was his task to incorporate those of See also:Hanover, See also:Hesse and See also:Nassau. He retired on the 1st of See also:January 1875, and died at See also:Ansbach on the 21st of See also:July 1886. Duncker's eminent position, among German historians rests mainly on his Geschichte See also:des Alterthums (1st ed., 1852–1857); 5th ed. in 9 vols., 1878-1886; See also:English See also:translation by See also:Evelyn See also:Abbott, 1877-1882). He edited, with J. G. See also:Droysen, Preussische Staatsschriften, Politische Correspondenz Friedrichs des Grossen, and Urkunden and Actenstiicke zur Geschichte des Kurfursten See also:Friedrich Wilhelm von See also:Brandenburg. To the See also:period of his See also:political activity belong Zur Geschichte der deutschen Reichsversammlung in Frankfurt (1849); Heinrich von See also:Gagern (185o), in the See also:series of Manner der Gegenwart ; and the See also:anonymous Vier Monate auswartiger Politik (1851). His other See also:works include Origines Germanicae (184o); the lectures See also:Die Krisis der See also:Reformation (1845) and Feudalitat and Aristokratie (1858); Aus der Zeit Friedrichs des Grossen and Friedrich Wilhelm III. Abhandlungen zur preussischen Geschichte (1876); followed after his See also:death by Abhandlungen aus der griechischen Geschichte and Abhandlungen aus der neueren Geschichte (1887).
