ANSBACH , or ANsPACH, originally Onolzbach, a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Bavaria, on the Rezat, 27 M. by See also:rail S.W. of See also:Nuremberg, and do m. N. of See also:Munich. Pop. (1900) 17,555. It contains a See also:palace, once the See also:residence of the margraves of Anspach, with See also:fine gardens; several churches, the finest of which are those dedicated to St See also:John, containing the vault of the former margraves, and St Gumbert; a gymnasium; a picture See also:gallery; a municipal museum and a See also:special technicalschool. Ansbach possesses monuments to the poets See also:August, See also:Count von Platen-Hallermund, and Johann See also:Peter Uz, who were See also:born here, and to Kaspar See also:Hauser, who died here. The See also:chief manufactures are machinery, toys; woollen, See also:cotton, and See also:half-See also:silk stuffs, embroideries, earthenware, See also:tobacco, See also:cutlery and playing See also:cards. There is considerable See also:trade in See also:grain, See also:wool and See also:flax. In 1791 the last See also:margrave of Anspach sold his principality to See also:Frederick See also:William II., See also:king of See also:Prussia; it was transferred by See also:Napoleon to Bavaria in ,8o6, an See also:act which was confirmed by the See also:congress of See also:Vienna in 1815.
