The boundary See also:line is See also:drawn from a point opposite to the mouth of the See also:Alder, and follows the centre of the See also:longitudinal See also:axis See also:north-eastwards to 56° 50' N., where it strikes eastwards to the See also:shore. All of the lake to the S. and E. of this line belongs to Perthshire, the See also:rest, forming the See also:major portion, to Inverness-shire. It is a lonely lake, situated in extremely See also:wild surroundings at a height of 1153 ft. above the See also:sea, being thus the loftiest lake of large See also:size in the See also:United See also:Kingdom. It is over 14z M. See also:long, with a mean breadth of See also:half a mile and over 1 m. at its maximum. Its See also:area amounts to some 71 sq. m., and it receives the drainage of an area of nearly 50 sq. m. The mean See also:depth is 189 ft., and the maximum 512 ft. It has a See also:general trend from N.E. to S.W., the See also:head lying 1 m. from Dalwhinnie station on the Highland railway. It receives many streams, and discharges at the See also:south-western extremity by the Ericht. See also:Salmon and See also:trout afford See also:good fishing. The surrounding mountains are lofty and rugged. See also:Ben Alder (3757 ft.) on the See also:west shore is the See also:chief feature of the See also:great Corrour -See also:ERIDANUS See also:deer See also:forest.
