He studied See also:medicine at University See also:College, See also:London, and at See also:Paris, devoting himself in the See also:early years of his career to See also:physiology, and lecturing on See also:general See also:anatomy and physiology at University College See also:hospital. In 1844 he was secretary to the physiological See also:section of the British Association, and in 1845 he was awarded the Fothergillian See also:gold See also:medal of the Royal Humane Society for his See also:essay on See also:asphyxia. In 1848 he was appointed assistant surgeon at University College hospital, and in 185o became full surgeon and See also:professor of See also:surgery, his lectures and clinical teaching being much admired; and in 1875 he joined the consulting See also:staff. His See also:Science and See also:Art of Surgery (1853) went through many See also:editions. He See also:rose to be See also:president of the College of Surgeons in 1880. From 1879 to 1881 he was president of the Royal Medical and Chirurgical Society. He was created a See also:baronet in 1895, having been for some years surgeon-extraordinary to See also:Queen See also:Victoria. As a surgeon his reputation was See also:world-wide, and he See also:counts (says Sir W. See also:MacCormac in his See also:volume on the See also:Centenary of the Royal College of Surgeons) " among the makers of See also:modern surgery." He was a recognized authority on concussion of the spine, and was often called to give See also:evidence in See also:court on obscure cases caused by railway accidents, &c. He died at See also:Folkestone on the 23rd of See also:September 1896.
