E. by S. of See also:London, on the See also:South Eastern & See also:Chatham railway. Pop. (1891) 13,414; (1901) 25,296. It lies on the south See also:bank of the See also:Thames and extends up the hills above the See also:shore, many villas having been erected on the higher ground. The See also:park of a former seat, See also:Belvedere, was thus built over (c. 1860), and the See also:mansion became a See also:home for disabled See also:seamen. The See also: 1Erra-See also:hythe (old haven), was anciently a See also:borough, and was granted a See also:market and fairs in 1313.
