ETTLINGEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:grand-duchy of See also:Baden, on the See also:Alb, and the railway See also:Mannheim-See also:Basel, 41 m. S. of See also:Karlsruhe. Pop. (1905) 8040. It is still surrounded by old walls and ditches, and presents a See also:medieval and picturesque See also:appearance. Among its more striking edifices are an old princely See also:residence, with extensive grounds, an Evangelical and two See also:Roman See also:Catholic churches, and the buildings of a former monastery. There are also many Roman remains, notable among them the " See also:Neptune " See also:sculpture, now embedded in the See also:wall of the town-See also:hall. Its See also:chief manufactures are See also:paper-making, See also:spinning, See also:weaving and See also:machine See also:building. The cultivation of See also:wine and See also:fruit is also largely carried on, and in these products considerable See also:trade is done. The first See also:notice of Ettlingen See also:dates from the 8th See also:century. It became a town in 1227 and was presented by the See also:emperor See also:Frederick II. to the See also:margrave of Baden. In 1689 it was pillaged by the See also:French, and near the town See also:Moreau defeated the See also:archduke See also:Charles on the 9th and loth of See also:July 1796.
