He was educated at See also:Oxford, where, at the See also:age of twenty, he was imprisoned for recusancy. On his See also:release he went to See also:London, where he was a member of the association of See also:young men founded in 158o to assist the See also:Jesuits See also:Edmund See also:Campion and See also:Robert See also:Parsons. In 1582 he withdrew to the See also:continent, where he was active in the cause of See also:Mary, See also:queen of Scots. He married in this See also:year Dorothy, daughter of See also:Edward See also:East of Bledlow in See also:Buckinghamshire. After the See also:death of his wife (1588) he went to See also:Spain, where on the recommendation of the See also:duke of Feria he received a See also:pension from the See also:king. He continued his intrigues against the English See also:government, and in 1598 he was charged with complicity in a See also:plot to See also:poison Queen See also:Elizabeth. After this he was for a See also:short while in the service of the duke of Feria at See also:Milan, then went to See also:Rome, where he was ordained See also:priest (16(D1–16o2) and became See also:agent for the English See also:clergy. He was unpopular with them, however, owing to his subserviency to the Jesuits, and resigned the agency in 1607 owing to the remonstrances of the English See also:arch-priest See also:George Birkhead. In 1613 he joined the Society of Jesus, and was appointed See also:superior of the English See also:mission at See also:Brussels in 1616, and in 1618 See also:rector of the English See also:college at Rome. He held this See also:post to within a year of his death, which occurred at Rome on the 7th of See also:August (O.S.) 164o. See also:Father Fitzherbert, who is described as " a See also:person of excellent parts, a notable politician, and of graceful behaviour and generous spirit," wrote many controversial See also:works, a See also:list of which is given in the See also:article on him by Mr See also:Thompson See also:Cooper .in the See also:Dictionary of See also:National See also:Biography, together with authorities for his See also:life.
