He learned See also:practical See also:engineering at Middlesborough-on-See also:Tees, and about 1850 invented a See also:mechanical See also:system for the drainage of See also:land. In 1852 he began experiments in See also:steam cultivation, and in 1858 the Royal Agricultural Society awarded him the See also:prize of 500 which it had offered for a steam-See also:cultivator that should be an economic substitute for the plough or the See also:spade. In 186o he founded at Hunslet, See also:Leeds, the See also:firm of Fowler & Co., manufacturers of agricultural machinery, See also:traction engines, &c. He died at Ackworth, See also:Yorkshire, on the 4th of See also:December 1864.
