JOHN IV . (1603-1656), the Fortunate, See also:king of See also:Portugal, was See also:born at See also:Villaviciosa in See also:March 1603, succeeded to the dukedom of See also:Braganza in 1630, and married Luisa de Guzman, eldest daughter of the See also:duke of See also:Medina Sidonia, in 1633. By the unanimous See also:voice of the See also:people he was raised to the See also:throne of Portugal (of which he was held to be the legitimate See also:heir) at the revolution effected in See also:December 164o against the See also:Spanish king, See also:Philip IV. His See also:accession led to a protracted See also:war with See also:Spain, which only ended with the recognition of Portuguese 'See also:independence in a subsequent reign (1668). He died on the 6th of See also:November 1656, and was succeeded by his son See also:Alphonso VI.
