JOYEUSE ENTREE , a famous See also:charter of See also:liberty granted to See also:Brabant by See also:Duke See also:John III. in 1354. John summoned the representatives of the cities of the duchy to See also:Louvain to announce to them the See also:marriage of his daughter and heiress Jeanne of Brabant to See also:Wenceslaus duke of See also:Luxemburg, and he offered them liberal concessions in See also:- ORDER

John III. died in 1355, and Wenceslaus and Jeanne on the occasion of their See also:state entry into See also:Brussels solemnly swore to observe all the provisions of the charter, which had been See also:drawn up. From the occasion on which it was first proclaimed this charter has since been known in See also:history as La Joyeuse Entree. By this document the See also:dukes of Brabant undertook to maintain the integrity of the duchy, and not to wage See also:war, make See also:treaties, or impose taxes without the consent of their subjects, as represented by the municipalities. All members of the duke's See also:council were to be native-See also:born Brabanters. This charter became the See also:model for other provinces and the See also:bulwark of the liberties of the See also:Netherlands. Its provisions were modified from See also:- TIME (0. Eng. Lima, cf. Icel. timi, Swed. timme, hour, Dan. time; from the root also seen in " tide," properly the time of between the flow and ebb of the sea, cf. O. Eng. getidan, to happen, " even-tide," &c.; it is not directly related to Lat. tempus)

time to time, but remained practically unchanged from the reign of See also:Charles V. onwards. The See also:ill-advised See also:attempt of the See also:emperor See also:Joseph II. in his reforming zeal to abrogate the Joyeuse Entree caused a revolt in Brabant, before which he had to yield.
