hill station in See also:Satara See also:district, and the See also:principal See also:sanatorium in the Bombay See also:presidency, See also:India. Pop. (1901), 5299. It is reached by See also:carriage from Wathar railway station (39 m.) or by motor See also:car from See also:Poona (119 m.). Mahabaleshwar occupies the See also:summit of a See also:ridge of the Western See also:Ghats, with a See also:general See also:elevation of 4500 ft. above See also:sea-level. It was established in 1828 by See also:Sir See also:John See also:Malcolm. See also:governor of Bombay, who obtained the site from the See also:raja of Satara in See also:exchange for another patch of territory. The See also:superior elevation of Mahabaleshwar renders it much cooler than See also:Matheran (2460 ft.), a sanatorium about 5o M. E. of Bombay, but its heavy rainfall (292 in. See also:annual See also:average) makes it almost uninhabitable during the See also:rainy See also:season. The mean annual temperature is 67° F. In the hottest season (See also:March-See also:April) an extreme of a little over 90 is reached during the See also:day. Mahabaleshwar forms the See also:retreat usually during See also:spring, and occasionally in autumn, of the governor of Bombay, and the See also:chief See also:officers of his See also:establishment, and has the usual public buildings of a first-class sanatorium.
