He was instrumental in negotiating the See also:marriage between Victor Emmanuel's daughter Clothilde and Napoleon's See also:nephew, and during the war of 1859 he was always with the See also:emperor. He was recalled from Paris when the occupation of the See also:Marche and See also:Umbria by the Piedmontese caused a See also:breach in Franco-Italian relations, and was appointed secretary of See also:state to the See also:prince of See also:Carignano, See also:viceroy of the Neapolitan provinces. When Napoleon recognized the See also:kingdom of See also:Italy in 1861, Nigra returned to See also:France as See also:minister-See also:resident, and for many years played a most important part in See also:political affairs. In 1876 he was transferred to St See also:Petersburg with the See also:rank of See also:ambassador, in 1882 to London, and in 1885 to See also:Vienna. In 1899 he represented Italy at the first See also:Hague Peace Conference. In 1904 he retired, and he died at See also:Rapallo on the 1st of See also:July 1907. He was created count in 1882 and senator in 189o. Nigra was a See also:sound classical See also:scholar, and published See also:translations of many See also:Greek and Latin poems with valuable comments; he was also a poet and the author of several See also:works of folk-See also:lore and popular See also:poetry, of which the most important is his Canti popolari del Piemonte.
