CARIGNANO , a See also:

town of See also:Piedmont, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Turin, 11 m. S. by See also:steam See also:tramway from the town of Turin. Pop. (1901) town, 4672, See also:commune, 7104. It has a handsome See also:church (S. Giovanni Battista) erected in 1756–1766 by the architect Benedetto See also:Alfieri di Sostegno (1700–1767), See also:uncle of the poet Alfieri. S. Maria delle Grazie contains the See also:tomb of Bianca See also:Palaeologus, wife of See also:Duke See also:Charles I. of See also:Savoy, at whose See also:court See also:Bayard was brought up. The town passed into the hands of the See also:counts of Savoy in 1418. Carignano was erected by Charles See also:Emmanuel I. of Savoy into a principality as an See also:appanage for his third son, See also:Thomas See also:Francis (1596–1656), whose descendant, Charles See also:Albert, See also:prince of Carignano, became See also:king of See also:Sardinia on the extinction of the See also:elder See also:line of the See also:house of Savoy with the See also:death of Charles See also:Felix in 1831. The house of Carignano See also:developed two junior branches, those of See also:Soissons and Villafranca. The first of these, which became See also:extinct in 1734, was founded by See also:Eugene See also:Maurice, second son of Thomas, by his wife See also:Marie de See also:Conde, countess of Soissons, who received his See also:mother's countship as his appanage.

In 1662 the town of Yvois in the See also:

Ardennes was raised by See also:Louis XIV. into a duchy in his favour, its name being changed at the same See also:time to Carignan. The famous Prince Eugene was the second son of the first duke of Carignan. The See also:branch of Villafranca started with Eugene Marie Louis (d. 1785), second son of Louis See also:Victor of Carignano, whose See also:grandson Eugene (1816–1888), afterwards an See also:admiral in the See also:Italian See also:navy, was created prince of Savoy-Carignano, by King Charles Albert in 1834. He had contracted a morganatic See also:marriage, and in 1888, on the occasion of his See also:silver See also:wedding, the See also:title of countess of Villafranca was bestowed upon his wife, his eldest son, Filiberto, being at the, same time created See also:count of Villafranca, and his younger son, See also:Vittorio, count of Soissons.
