Pereyaslavl was formerly remarkable for the number and importance of its ecclesiastical See also:foundations. Among those still See also:standing are the 12th-See also:century See also:cathedral, with See also:ancient See also:wall-paintings and the See also:graves of See also:Demetrius, son of See also:Alexander Nevsky, and other princes, and a See also:church founded by Eudoxia (See also:Euphrosyne), wife of Demetrius Donskoi, in the See also:close of the 14th century. It is by its extensive See also:cotton manufactures that Pereyaslavl is now best known. The See also:fisheries in the lake (20 M. sq. in extent and 175 ft. deep) have See also:long been of See also:great value. Founded in 1152 by Yuryi Dolgoruki, See also:prince of Suzdal, Pereyaslavl soon began to See also:play a considerable See also:part in the See also:history of the See also:country. From 1195 till 1302 it had princes of its own; and the princes of Moscow, to whom it was at the latter date bequeathed, kept it (apart from some temporary alienations in the 14th century) as part of their patrimony throughout the 15th and 16th centuries. Lake Pleshcheevo was the See also:scene of See also:Peter the Great's first attempts (1691) at creating a See also:fleet.
