REUTLINGEN , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Wurttemberg, situated on the Echatz, an affluent of the See also:Neckar, near the See also:base of the Achalm and 36 m. by See also:rail S. of See also:Stuttgart. Pop. (1905) 23,850. It is a quaintly built town, with many picturesque houses and a See also:fine See also:Gothic See also:church of the 13th and 14th centuries dedicated to St See also:Mary, which was restored in 1893-1901; it contains in the See also:choir a replica of the See also:Holy See also:Sepulchre and a sculptured See also:stone See also:font, and has a See also:tower 240 ft. high. Reutlingen has three other Evangelical churches, a See also:Roman See also:Catholic church, a town See also:hall, and several monuments, including one to the See also:emperor See also:William I. and another to See also:Friedrich See also:List. The See also:industries of the town are numerous, and include the See also:spinning and See also:weaving of See also:cotton, See also:dyeing and See also:bleaching; also the manufacture of See also:leather, machinery, See also:furniture, shoes, See also:paper, clothing, hardware, bricks, See also:beer and woollen goods. Hops, vines and See also:fruit are grown. in the neighbourhood. Reutlingen has several See also:schools and educational establishments, including a celebrated pomological See also:institute. It is also famous as the See also:place where Pastor Gustav See also:Werner (1809-1887) founded his See also:Christian Socialist See also:refuge, which has become widely known in philanthropic circles. Reutlingen, which is first mentioned in 1213, became a See also:free imperial town in the 13th See also:century and was fortified by the emperor See also:Frederick II., remaining loyal to him and to his son, See also:Conrad 1V. A member of the See also:league of Swabian towns, its citizens defeated See also:Count See also:Ulrich of Wurttemberg on the 14th of May 1377. Later it joined the Swabian League and was favoured by the emperor See also:Maximilian I.

It came into the See also:

possession of Wurttemberg in 1802. An See also:explosion which took place on the 27th of See also:December 1852 destroyed many houses in the town.
