Having studied See also:jurisprudence (1834–1838) at the See also:universities of See also:Bonn, See also:Heidelberg and See also:Berlin, he entered the See also:Mecklenburg See also:State service and was subsequently attached to the " Kammergericht " in Berlin. Tiring of See also:official See also:work, he resigned his See also:appointment, and after travelling in See also:Italy, See also:Egypt and See also:Spain, was attached to the See also:court of the See also:grand See also:duke of See also:Oldenburg, whom he accompanied on a See also:journey to the See also:East. On his return he entered the Oldenburg See also:government service, and in 1849 was sent as See also:envoy to Berlin. In 1852 he retired from his See also:diplomatic See also:post, resided for a while on his estates in Mecklenburg and then travelled in Spain, where he studied Moorish See also:history. In 1855, he settled at See also:Munich, where he was made member of the See also:academy of sciences, and here collected a splendid See also:gallery of pictures, containing masterpieces of See also:Genelli, See also:Feuerbach, See also:Schwind, Bdcklin, See also:Lenbach, &c., and which, though bequeathed by him to the See also:Emperor See also:William II., still remains at Munich and is one of the noted galleries in that See also:city. He died at See also:Rome on the 14th of See also:April 1894. Schack was a most productive author; he wrote lyric poems (Gedichte, 1867, 6th ed. 1888) ; novels in See also:verse, Durch alle Wetter (187o, 3rd ed. 1875) and Ebenbiirtig (1876) ; the dramatic poem Helidor (1878); the tragedies See also:Die Pisaner (1872) and Walpurga and Der Johanniter (1887); and the See also:political comedies, Der Kaiserbote and Cancan (1873). As an historian of literature• and See also:art, he published Geschichte der dramatischen Literatur and Kunst in Spanien (3 vols. 1845-1846, 2nd ed.

1854), Poesie and Kunst der Araber in Spanien and Sicilien (1865, 2nd ed. 1877), which are valuable contributions to See also:

literary history. He also produced some excellent See also:translations, e.g. Spanisches Theater (1845) ; Heldensagen See also:des Firdusi (1851) and Stimmen vom See also:Ganges (1857, 2nd ed. 1877). He also compiled the See also:catalogue and history of his own picture gallery, Meine Gemaldesammlung (7th ed., 1894). His collected See also:works, Gesammelte Werke, were published in six volumes (1883, 3rd ed. in to vols. 1897-1899). Nachgelassene Dichtungen were edited by G. Winkler (1896).
