SEGANTINI, GIOVANNI (1858-1899) , See also:Italian painter, was See also:born at Arco in the Trentino on the 15th of See also:June 1858. His See also:mother, who died in 1863, belonged to an old See also:family of the See also:mountain See also:country. His See also:father, who was a See also:man of the See also:people, went to See also:Milan, whence he set forth with another son to seek his See also:fortune, leaving Giovanni behind. At the See also:age of seven the See also:child ran away; he was found perishing of See also:cold and See also:hunger, and was obliged to See also:earn his See also:bread by keeping the flocks on the hills. He spent his See also:long See also:hours of solitude in See also:drawing. Owing to his fame having reached the ears of a See also:syndic, he was sent back to Milan; but, unable to endure domestic See also:life, he soon escaped again, and led a wandering life till he met at Arco with his See also:half-See also:brother, who offered him the See also:place of See also:cashier in his See also:provision See also:shop. After more flights and more returns, Segantini remained at Milan to attend classes at the Brera, earning a living meanwhile by giving lessons and See also:painting portraits. His first picture, " The See also:Choir of Sant See also:Antonio," was noticed for its powerful quality. After painting this, however, he shook himself See also:free by degrees of academical teaching, as in his picture " The See also:Ship." He subsequently painted The See also:Falconer" and "The Dead See also:Hero," and then settled in See also:Brianza, near See also:Como. There he gave himself up to the study of mountain life, and became in truth the painter of the See also:Alps. At this See also:time he painted the " See also:Ave Maria," which took a See also:gold See also:medal at the See also:Amsterdam See also:Exhibition (1883), " Mothers," " After a See also:Storm in the Alps," " A See also:Kiss," and " Moonlight Effect." Deeply impressed by See also:Millet, the artist nevertheless quickly strove to reassert his individuality, as may be seen in " The Drinking-place," which gained a gold medal in See also:Paris (1889), "In the See also:Sheep-See also:fold,"" By the See also:Spinning-See also:wheel," and " Ploughing in the See also:Engadine," for which he was awarded a gold medal at the See also:Turin Exhibition (1892). Besides those See also:works in which he studied See also:simple effects of See also:light and Alpine scenery, such as " Midday on the Alps " and " See also:Winter at Savognino," he also painted symbolical subjects: "The See also:Punishment of Luxury," and the " Unnatural Mothers " (in the See also:Walker See also:Art See also:Gallery, See also:Liverpool).

Segantini died at Maloja in See also:

October 1899. An exhibition of his works was held in See also:London, and afterwards at See also:Brussels in 1899, and at Milan in 1900.
