TAURIDA , a See also:

government of See also:southern See also:Russia, including the See also:peninsula of See also:Crimea and a See also:tract of mainland situated between the See also:lower See also:Dnieper and the coasts of the See also:Black See also:Sea and the Sea of See also:Azov. It is bounded by these two seas on the S., while it has on the N. the governments of See also:Kherson and Ekaterinoslay. The See also:area is 24,532 sq. m., of which 9704 sq. m. belong to the Crimea. The See also:continental See also:part consists of a gently undulating See also:steppe (from sea-level up to 400 ft. in the See also:north-See also:east) of black See also:earth, with only a few patches of saline See also:clay on the shores of the Sivash or Putrid Sea, and See also:sand along the lower Dnieper. The government is drained by the Dnieper, which flows along the frontier for 18o m., and by two See also:minor.streams, the Molochnaya and Berda. Many small lakes and ponds occur in the north, as well as on the Kinburn peninsula, at the mouth of the Dnieper, where See also:salt is made. There are no forests. The See also:climate is continental, and resembles that of central Crimea and Kherson. The See also:population in 1906 was estimated at 1,634,700. The continental portion, although less mixed than that of the peninsula, consists of See also:Great and Little Russians, who constitute 83 per cent. of the whole, Germans (5.4 per cent.), Bulgarians (2.8 per cent.), See also:Jews (3.8 per cent.), and Armenians. The See also:chief occupation of the See also:people is See also:agriculture, and every available patch of See also:land has been brought under the plough. In 190o no less than 43 per cent. of its area was under cereal crops alone.

principal crops are See also:rye, See also:wheat, oats, See also:barley and potatoes: See also:Tobacco is also grown, and over 32,000 acres are under vineyards, while gardens extend to some 15,500 acres in Crimea. Live-stock breeding is extensively engaged in. Salt is the only See also:mineral raised, but the See also:iron See also:industry, and especially the manufacture of agricultural machinery (e.g. at See also:Berdyansk), has greatly See also:developed. The export See also:trade is considerable, the chief ports being See also:Sevastopol, See also:Eupatoria, See also:Theodosia, and See also:Yalta on the Black Sea, and Azov and Berdyanskon the Sea of Azov. The See also:fisheries along the See also:coast are active. Manufactures are insignificant, but there is a brisk export trade in See also:grain, salt, See also:fish, See also:wool and See also:tallow. The government is divided into eight districts, the chief towns of which are See also:Simferopol, See also:capital of the government, Eupatoria and Theodosia, in Crimea, and Aleshki, Berdyansk, Melitopol, See also:Perekop and Yalta on the See also:continent.
