town in the See also:province of See also:Gelderland,' See also:Holland, pn the right See also:bank of the Waal (here crossed by a See also:pontoon See also:bridge), 25 M. by See also:rail See also:west of See also:Nijmwegen. Pop. (1900), 10,788. It possesses See also:fine streets and open places, but of its fortifications the Kleiberg See also:Gate (1647) alone remains. The See also:principal buildings are St See also:Martin's See also:church (15th See also:century), the town See also:hall, See also:court-See also:house and the See also:historical See also:castle of the See also:family of See also:van Arkel. In 1892 a See also:harbour was built, but the See also:shipping of Tiel is now chiefly confined to See also:craft for inland See also:navigation. It carries on a flourishing See also:trade, especially in See also:fruit, and is an important See also:market for horses and See also:cattle. It also manufactures agricultural implements, See also:furniture, See also:paper, See also:tobacco, &c. Five See also:miles W.N.W. of Tiel is the small town of Buren, which contains some interesting old houses and is an important market for horses. Buren was the seat of an See also:independent lordship which is mentioned as See also:early as 1152. In later times it was held in See also:fief, first from the See also:dukes of See also:Brabant, then from the dukes of Gelderland. In •1492 the See also:emperor See also:Charles V. raised it to a countship, and in 1551 it passed by See also:marriage to See also:Prince See also:William of See also:Orange See also:Nassau.

title is now sometimes used by the royal family of the See also:Netherlands when travelling ihcog'-nito. The castle was destroyed in the beginning of. thee egith century, and the site of it is now marked by the See also:park on the west See also:side of the town. It contained not less than 170 apartments and was memorable for the imprisonment within its walls of Arnoud See also:duke of Gelderland (d. 1473), and as the See also:birth-See also:place of See also:Philip William of Orange in 1554.
