It is a narrow, beautifully wooded glen, of no See also:great See also:depth, extending from See also:Loch Achray to Loch See also:Katrine, and continued thence by a See also:strip on the See also:north-eastern See also:shore to a point above the now submerged See also:Silver Strand opposite to Ellen's Isle—a See also:total distance of 22 m. It is situated 8 m. W. of See also:Callander and 5 M. N. of See also:Aberfoyle, with both of which places there is daily communication by See also:coach during the tourist See also:season. It lies between the steep See also:green slopes of See also:Ben See also:Venue (2393 ft.) on the S.W. and the precipitous craigs of Ben A'an (1750 ft.) on the N.E. Characterized by lovely scenery, owing to its harmonious blending of See also:wood; See also:water, See also:rock and See also:hill, the region has been famous ever since the See also:appearance of See also:Sir See also:Walter See also:Scott's The See also:Lady of the See also:Lake and Rob See also:Roy. Before the construction of the road that now winds through the pass, Sir Walter says that the only See also:access to the lake was by means of a See also:ladder formed out of the branches and roots of trees. A rustic See also:pier has been built at the Trossachs end of Loch Katrine for the convenience of tourists, and a large hotel stands on the See also:northern shore of Loch Achray, near the beginning of the pass.
