borough and the See also:county-seat of Fayette county, See also:Pennsylvania, U.S.A., about 40 M. S. by E. of See also:Pittsburg. Pop. (1900) 7344 (449 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1910) 13,344, Uniontown is served by the Pennsylvania and the See also:Baltimore & See also:Ohio See also:railways. See also:Coal, See also:iron and natural See also:gas are found in the neighbouring region. The manufactures include See also:glass products, iron, See also:steel, See also:enamel, radiators, See also:coke, See also:flour and bricks. The See also:original See also:village was surveyed and laid out in 1776 on See also:land owned by See also:Henry Beeson, and the borough was incorporated in 1796. From 1827 to 1832 Uniontown was the seat of See also:Madison See also:College, formed from See also:Union See also:Academy (founded ,8o8); in 1832 the college was merged with See also:Allegheny College, of See also:Meadville, Pa. In 1866 the buildings were turned over to the Soldiers' Orphans' School (now at Jumonville, a suburb), which occupied them until 1875. In the See also:south-eastern See also:part of the county is the See also:district known as See also:Great Meadows; here See also:George See also:Washington built Fort See also:Necessity in 1754, and See also:General See also:Edward See also:Braddock died and was buried here after his defeat by the See also:French and See also:Indians in 1755.
