place, and member of the Cinque See also:Port of See also:Sandwich, in the St See also:Augustine's See also:parliamentary See also:division of See also:Kent, See also:England, 2 M. S. of See also:Deal, on the See also:South-Eastern & See also:Chatham railway. Pop. of See also:urban See also:district (1901) 5248. See also:Lower Walmer, the portion most frequented by visitors, extends northward along the See also:coast, so as to be contiguous with Deal. Upper Walmer is a See also:short distance inland, and below it Walmer See also:Castle lies See also:close to the See also:sea. This was a See also:blockhouse built for coast See also:defence by See also:Henry VIII., but became the See also:official See also:residence of the Lords See also:Warden of the Cinque Ports, and was in consequence much altered from its See also:original See also:condition. It ceased to be the official residence in 1905, when the See also:prince of See also:Wales (afterwards See also:George V.) was appointed See also:Lord Warden, and the public was given See also:access to those rooms which possess See also:historical associations with former holders of the See also:office, such as the See also:duke of See also:Wellington, who died here in 1852, See also:William See also:Pitt and others. See also:Kingsdown, 1 m. south, is a decayed member of the Cinque Port of See also:Dover.
