AMBERG , a See also:

town of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of See also:Bavaria, formerly the See also:capital of the Upper See also:Palatinate, situated on both sides of the Vils, 42 M. E. of See also:Nuremberg by See also:rail. Pop. 22,089. It has a town See also:hall with handsome rooms, a library, a gymnasium, a See also:lyceum, elementary See also:schools, an See also:arsenal, and eleven churches, the finest of which is St See also:Martin's, of the 15th See also:century, with many excellent paintings and a See also:tower 300 ft. high. A former Jesuit monastery is now used for a See also:grammar school and See also:seminary. There are also a See also:pilgrimage See also:church on a See also:hill 1621 ft. high, a large convict See also:prison for men, an See also:industrial, commercial and other schools. The See also:principal manufactures are firearms, ironmongery, earthenware, woollen See also:cloth, See also:beer, stoneware, See also:zinc goods, See also:colours and See also:salt; in the neighbourhood are See also:iron and See also:coal mines. The See also:French under See also:Jourdan were defeated by the Austrians under the See also:Archduke See also:Charles near Amberg in 1796.
