BALLYMOTE , a See also:

(1901) 997. It is a centre for some agricultural See also:trade and has See also:carriage-See also:building See also:works. There are remains of a strong See also:castle, built by the powerful See also:earl of See also:Ulster, See also:Richard de See also:Burgh, in 1300, and the See also:scene of hostilities in 1641 and 1652. Ruins are also seen of a Franciscan See also:foundation attributed to the 13th See also:century; it was a celebrated seat of learning and an extant memorial of the See also:work of its monks is the See also:Book of Ballymote (c. 1391) in the See also:possession of the Royal Irish See also:Academy, a See also:miscellaneous collection in See also:prose and See also:verse of See also:historical, genealogical and romantic writings. There are also, near the town, ruins of a See also:house of the Knights of St See also:John (1303).
