WILLIAM (1819-1891) , See also:English engineer, was See also:born at See also:Enfield on the 28th of See also:March 1819. At the See also:age of seventeen he was articled to an engineer, and a few years later he began to practise successfully on his own See also:account. His name is best known for the See also:engineering See also:works he carried out in See also:London, especially for the construction of the See also:main drainage See also:system and the See also:Thames See also:embankment. In 1848 the See also:control of London drainage, which had hitherto been divided among eight distinct municipal bodies, was consolidated under twelve commissioners, who were in 1849 superseded by a second See also:commission. Under the latter Bazalgette accepted an See also:appointment which he continued to hold under the three successive commissions which in the course of a See also:year or two followed the second one, and when finally in 1855 these bodies were replaced by the See also:Metropolitan See also:Board of Works, he was at once appointed its See also:chief engineer. His plans were ready, but the See also:work was delayed by See also:official obstruction and formality until 1858. Once begun, however, it was vigorously pushed on, and in 1865 the system was formally opened. It consisted of 83 m. of large intercepting sewers, draining more than See also:loo sq. m. of buildings, and calculated to See also:deal with 420 million gallons a See also:day. The cost was £4,600,000. Almost simultaneously Bazalgette was engaged on the plans for the Thames embankment. The See also:section between See also:Westminster and See also:Vauxhall on the See also:Surrey See also:side was built between 186o and 1869, and the length between Westminster and Blackfriars was declared open by the See also:prince of See also:Wales in 187o. The See also:Chelsea embankment followed in 1871-1874, and in 1876 See also:Northumberland See also:Avenue was formed.

scheme exceeded £2,000,000. Bazalgette was also responsible for various other engineering works in the metropolitan See also:area, designing, for example, new See also:bridges at Putney and See also:Battersea, and the See also:steam See also:ferry between See also:north and See also:south See also:Woolwich. He also prepared plans for a See also:bridge over the See also:river near the See also:Tower and for a See also:tunnel under it at Blackwall, but did not live to see either of these projects carried out.
