He appears to have been well educated; he was certainly See also:clever, and after coming to See also:London in 1670 he became acquainted with some See also:Jesuits and was occasionally employed by them. Calling himself now See also:Captain See also:Williams, now See also:Lord See also:Gerard or Lord See also:Newport or Lord See also:Cornwallis, he travelled from one See also:part of See also:Europe to another; he underwent imprisonments for See also:crime, and became an See also:expert in all kinds of duplicity. Then in 1678, following the See also:lead of See also:Titus See also:Oates, he gave an See also:account of a supposed popish See also:plot to the English See also:government, and his version of the details of the See also:murder of See also:Sir E. B. See also:Godfrey was rewarded with £5oo. Emboldened by his success he denounced various See also:Roman Catholics, married an Irish See also:lady, and having become very popular lived in luxurious See also:fashion. Afterwards his fortunes waned, and he died at See also:Bristol on the loth of See also:August 1680. His dying depositions, which were taken by Sir See also:Francis See also:North, See also:chief See also:justice of the See also:common pleas, revealed nothing of importance. Bedloe wrote a Narrative and impartial See also:discovery of the horrid Popish Plot (1679), but all his statements are extremely untrustworthy. See J. See also:Pollock, The Popish Plot (1903).
