After living for several years on the See also:continent, he married in 1796 his niece, See also:Margaret See also:Agnew, daughter of See also:Robert Agnew, the See also:lieutenant-See also:governor of the Isle of See also:Man. Ostracised by their families for this step the couple decided to See also:settle in See also:America, where Blennerhassett in 1798 bought an See also:island in the See also:Ohio See also:river about 2 M. below See also:Parkersburg, See also:West See also:Virginia. Here in 18o5 he received a visit from See also:Aaron See also:Burr (q.v.), in whose See also:conspiracy he became interested, furnishing liberal funds for its support, and offering the use of his island as a See also:rendezvous for the gathering of arms and supplies and the training of See also:volunteers. When the conspiracy collapsed, the See also:mansion andisland were occupied and plundered by the Virginia See also:militia. Blennerhassett fled, was twice arrested and remained a prisoner until after Burr's See also:release: The island was then abandoned, and Blennerhassett was in, turn a See also:cotton planter in See also:Mississippi, and a lawyer (18'9-1822) in See also:Montreal, See also:Canada. After returning to See also:Ireland, he died in the island of See also:Guernsey on the 2nd of See also:February 1831. His wife, who had considerable See also:literary See also:talent and who published The Deserted Isle (1822) and The Widow of the See also:Rock and Other Poems (1824), returned to the See also:United States in 184o, and died soon afterward in New See also:York See also:City while attempting to obtain through See also:Congress See also:payment for See also:property destroyed on the island.
