He was educated at See also:Lincoln See also:College, See also:Oxford, and was called to the See also:bar at Lincoln's See also:Inn in 1857, and in 1872 became See also:chancellor of the See also:diocese of See also:Manchester. This he resigned in 1893. He held numerous appointments, notably the professorships of See also:history (from 1854 to 1856) and of See also:political See also:economy (from 1855 to 1866) at See also:Owens College, Manchester. He always took an active See also:interest in this college, of which he was one of the See also:governors; in 1893 he gave the Christie library See also:building designed by See also:Alfred See also:Waterhouse, and in 1897 he devoted £50,000 of the funds at his disposal as a trustee of See also:Sir See also:Joseph See also:Whitworth's See also:estate for the building of Whitworth See also:Hall, which completed the front quadrangle of the college. He was an enthusiastic See also:book See also:collector, and bequeathed to Owens College his library of about 75,000 volumes, See also:rich in a very See also:complete set of the books printed by See also:Dolet, a wonderful See also:series of Aldines, and of volumes printed by See also:Sebastian See also:Gryphius. His See also:Etienne Dolet, the See also:Martyr of the See also:Renaissance (188o), is the most exhaustive See also:work on the subject. He died at Ribsden on the 9th of See also:January 1901.
